I create the work I do because I want to have a way to express myself through photography. Also, I create the work I do because I want to improve my skills as a photographer and develop more ways to shoot my images. I want to be able to tell a story through my images. I want m work to be thought and emotion provoking. Basically, I want my work to have a sense of catharsis to it. As an artist, I want to be able to be very proud of the work I’ve accomplished and seeing an improvement, I want to always produce better work than I had before.
Before shooting, I like to think about creative themes that I can portray through something, and then deciding on what subject matter would best contribute to that theme. Unless I come into an “inspiration block” then I have to resort to using myself as subject matter. When creating my work, I like to consider what could I do to make this work stand out or what can I do to really make my work unique from everyone else. I like to choose digital for my AP rolls only because I have more control over what pieces I would like to use and there’s more control over how my pictures turn out. After creating my work, I like to edit my photos based on the theme that I chose. I like to make a few stand out from the rest, just to show which ones I enjoyed the most. Also, after shooting, I like to think about what and how I can do better next time .
My recent work is mostly focused on my concentration. Prior to this, I used to create work that was focused on more common and impersonal subjects, like nature and things like that. Last year, my work was sort of all over the place. This year, since I am taking the AP exam, I am trying to create a meaningful portfolio. All but one of my AP rolls have been about abuse in some way. Physical abuse or alcohol and drug abuse. I saw an example one day in class of a couple being photographed since they were in an abusive relationship. Ever since then, I have been fascinated with the topic. i have been exploring more camera techniques and ways to enhance my photography.
